Furlong et al, (2000) maintains that students should be at the heart of decisions made and that a high level of trust is of paramount importance in maintaining professional standards. Teachers in FE come into the sector with knowledge from industry, but do not always have the expertise to teach it to others. The problem with this can be that those who have come with specialist knowledge may not fully engage with the teaching side of it, wrongly believing that knowledge alone is enough to get them ahead in the FE sector. Tipton, 1973) Experts in certain subject fields are not always the best teachers and according to Robson, (2006) they can also be the ones who are most reluctant to take part in further teacher training. Yet training as a teacher is essential in attaining professional teaching status and in developing what is known as dual professionalism, meaning that you are up to date in teaching and subject knowledge. The sector, however is changing and Teachers in the post compul sory sector now have to undertake teacher training and be awarded QTLS status, and thus attain a professional role in FE. This was brought in from September 2007 and was welcomed by the IFL in its attempt to reinforce a professional identity to teachers in this sector. As noted earlier, one aspect of being a professional is being accountable for your actions and also being open to scrutiny from other professionals. The IFL have their own code of professional practice, which includes Reasonable care and responsibility to the institute’s condition of membership. He had a variety of different career prospects he would like to pursue, which included Police officer and Primary school teacher. He is one of very few males studying within Health and Social care, which is often viewed as a ‘Female’ subject due to the focus on care in different stages of life. Though he liked the look of the syllabus and the variety of subjects covered. Student A applied to both KGV and Southport College to do a BTEC first diploma in Public Services. Advice was offered by teachers at high school and KGV recruitment staff to apply for this level as his grades were low and e was not expected to get straight onto the National diploma. Though after GCSE results day he changed his mind with some guidance from the recruitment team at KGV and opted for the Health and social care BTEC first. This was due to it’s diverse content and diverse subject matter. This left his options open for choosing either BTEC national in Health and social care or Public ser vices if he passes the course and achieves his GCSE grade C in Maths. Student B applied to KGV after a 2 year gap from education and entered KGV after her 18th birthday. Student B finished high school with low GCSE results and started a BTEC first course in ICT at Southport College, but dropped out after 3 months of the course, insisting she had chosen the wrong course. Student B was interviewed separately after sending a letter of application to KGV, as she was not in education. Student B was offered a place in BTEC first Health and Social care, due to it having some units that were appealing and the fact that it would enable her to get onto a higher level course the following year. Students within college are contributing to their community through educating themselves with the potential to train in careers that have benefits to their own lives and those around them. Those educated would be more likely to make better choices and advance on to higher education, thus not adding to the rising amount of people out of work and claiming Job seekers allowance. At the beginning of the course during the Induction phase, students were asked to answer questions on themselves including careers, what looking forward in the course and of potential problems. Student B discussed her worry about the stress of combining her work out of college and her work within college. At this time she was living with her boyfriend and had to bring in rent each month. Students were warned about taking on too much work outside of college and signed an agreement to attend all lesson s and only work a maximum of around 8 hours a week. She was already exceeded this number and had agreed to try and reduce her hours. (Further information on Induction is offered in Appendix 1) During the induction week both students completed all work to a high enough standard to not warrant any specialist intervention. If extra help was needed the students would be reassessed by learning support and provided with additional help if needed. During the 3rd week of teaching Student A experienced some bullying within the class from two female students, who made jokes at his expense. Equality in the work place is part of Domain A from the LLUK standards, which aims to ensure that the classroom remains a safe and comfortable working environment for all. In order to fulfil my professional role I took the students out of the lesson at the end and explained what they had done, how unacceptable that behaviour is and the college policy on bullying. They later apologised and student A became more comfortable within the classroom. Discussion was had with Student A to ensure no further upset was caused. Later discussions with my mentor on the matter supplied me with alternative ways of dealing with said students. Student B was completing work on time, which was of a good quality up until half term and then her attendance began to slip dramatically. After 2 weeks of no contact with college, despite college trying to get in touch with her, she finally came back. It was discovered that her friend had been killed in a motor biking accident, she had split up with her live in boyfriend and was forced to move to a flat on her own. Within Domain F of LLUK standards offering support or directing towards appropriate support is part of being a professional in the FE sector. It was partly my responsibility to ensure the right staff got in touch with student B to offer support and help her in her crisis. Learning support staff were contacted and regular meetings were set up to help with college work and also offer advice on becoming a solo student and emotional support. Deadlines for coursework were extended with permission from the department head. Members of staff in FE have to deal with a increasingly wider job role that includes safe guarding of students under their watch, taking more responsibility for students within their proximity and being responsible for reporting any issues. This also relates to the ‘Every child matters’ Green paper and Children Act 2004, which covers; Physical and emotional well being and protection from harm and neglect. Here I had to consult my mentor in order to learn about dealing with such situations and how to report it in the future, to fulfil my professional role. Student A began to flourish within the class and produced solid Merit work, he was consistently on time with all work and had perfect attendance. He also gave regular feedback on sessions, even emailing after lessons he really enjoyed. This gave me immediate feedback on teaching and providing me valuable information on the quality of teaching from the students view. With Domain B on learning and teaching it is my professional role to inspire and create a working environment that is educational and includes all learners. This was my aim in each lesson and though it is difficult to inspire if the student is not attending. Student B became later with course work and began to miss appointments with support staff and myself. She missed important meetings on progression and student reviews. This was discussed amongst learning support staff and heads of department, resulting in warnings being given and attendance targets being set by SMT. Assessment for the BTEC course involved regular pieces of course work to be submitted, which were marked with appropriate feedback and an opportunity to increase the marks achieved. The course work was verified by the Pre advanced course leader and was marked by myself and internally verified by the head of department. This linked with Domain E on assessment, which makes sure assessment is fair and at a consistent standard along with offering students constructive feedback to learn from and advance their learning. Student A used the assessment to better himself unlike student B who would give in assignments late, without appropriate cover sheets and not turn up for feedback and so would not re submit course work. This limited her chance of achieving her target grade of a Merit. (For further information on Assessment see Appendix 2) Student A is currently at interview stage to try and get on to AS levels, although his grades are good, they do not fit the colleges grades for advancing on to As level, which includes A Distinction in coursework, GCSE grade C in Maths and English along with two other GCSE results at a grade B. Student A will definitely continue on with the college, but is being given advice on following either Public services or Health and social care national diploma. I have sent him to careers in order to get the most information he can to make the right choice for his future career, again demonstrating professionalism within Domain F in the work place. He will also be interviewed by the pre course assessor to guarantee he is making the appropriate choice, and sent a letter of acceptance sent out shortly after. Student B received final warnings about commitment and attendance and was eventually removed from College after Heads of department showed concern for her ability to complete their course with an attendance of only 40%. This could reflect badly on the recruitment team, as they knew she had dropped out before on a number of times and showed signs of prioritising outside activities over college. Though some of the personal problems would not necessarily have been apparent from her interview. Appraisal is a key form of QI within the college, giving staff a voice and an opportunity to advance themselves professionally, which would have the added effect of improving the quality of the college and therefore benefit the students. Betts (1996) argues that appraisal should actually be a positive tool to identify staff that may be in need of extra help and CPD opportunities to increase equality amongst staff. I have found it to be valuable in increasing my skills within the college and improving my prospect for taking on new challenges. This also ensures that members of staff retain their QTLS status. Responsibility for QA within colleges has increased dramatically, with colleges being trained up in a way that they are able to assure their own standards with out as much interference from outside organisations. Even OFSTED do not give inspect in as much detail if the college has shown it self to be of a high standard, though the high college standards use the strict OFSTED criteria. Awarding bodies that offer BTEC and A level examinations are cutting down on the need for external QA assessment, which saves money for both groups. This in turn directs the responsibility back toward the staff at the institution, which previously was described as having less responsibility by Elliott, 1996. This also creates a more professional and competitive environment. Internal inspections are also used to look at the overall running of subject departments and are done once a year. Teachers are then brought in to discuss the Quality of their subject team and are given smart goals in which to improve upon. This takes in to account grades and pass rates, success rates and retention levels along with quality of material given to students. Scores are compared against previous years results within the college, but also the national averages. (See Appendix 4 for health and Social care SAR) My own experience of QA and QI within college comes from my regular observations for both attaining QTLS status and also from within the college to ensure I am at an acceptable standard. In both instances feedback is given to guarantee that I am teaching at a level that is expected within the college and offer advice and guidance in the aim of improving my own skills and knowledge base. Yet I was disappointed to not be offered further help to dealing with some issues raised by my Observer. The college also offers opportunities to observe other members of the Health and Social care team. This is a valuable tool for Quality improvement allowing the opportunity to learn from established staff and alter my own teaching in a positive manner. This not only improves my own skills, but also is beneficial for the College as the students gain a teacher with greater skills and experience. As a BTEC teacher I have to mark coursework and for my first time I was not given much guidance with my marking until an entire unit had been marked. The head of department internally verified the marking to check the standard and consistency of the results. I was pleased that only one mark was changed and was given extra advice on my next piece of marking. I have now been included with the BTEC meetings on marking and standardisation with the aim of going on a workshop at the beginning of next term. This enables me to offer more constructive feedback to my learners and help guide my teaching to benefit the students with their work. One BTEC meeting involved a senior member of Edexcel on the changes to the Quality Assurance mechanism for BTEC programmes from 2010. Battle of Fredericksburg in the Civil War The Battle of Fredericksburg was was fought December 13, 1862, during the American Civil War (1861-1865) and saw Union forces suffer a bloody defeat. Having grown angry with Major General George B. McClellans unwillingness to pursue General Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia after the Battle of Antietam, President Abraham Lincoln relieved him on November 5, 1862, and replaced him with Major General Ambrose Burnside two days later. A West Point graduate, Burnside had achieved some success earlier in the war campaigning in North Carolina and leading IX Corps. A Reluctant Commander Despite this, Burnside had misgivings about his ability to lead the Army of the Potomac. He had twice declined the command citing that he was unqualified and lacked experience. Lincoln had first approached him following McClellans defeat on the Peninsula in July and made a similar offer following Major General John Popes defeat at Second Manassas in August. Asked again that fall, he only accepted when Lincoln told him that McClellan would be replaced regardless and that the alternative was Major General Joseph Hooker whom Burnside intensely disliked.      Burnsides Plan Reluctantly assuming command, Burnside was pressured to undertake offensive operations by Lincoln and Union General-in-Chief Henry W. Halleck. Planning a late fall offensive, Burnside intended to move into Virginia and openly concentrate his army at Warrenton. From this position he would feint towards Culpeper Court House, Orange Court House, or Gordonsville before quickly marching southeast to Fredericksburg. Hoping to sidestep Lees army, Burnside planned to cross the Rappahannock River and advance on Richmond via the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad. Requiring speed and guile, Burnsides plan built upon some operations that McClellan had been contemplating at the time of his removal. The final plan was submitted to Halleck on November 9. Burnside refused fearing that the fall rains would cause the river to rise and that Sumner would be cut off. Responding to Burnside, Lee initially anticipated having to make a stand behind the North Anna River to the south. This plan changed when he learned how slow Burnside was moving and he instead elected to march towards Fredericksburg. As the Union forces sat in Falmouth, Lieutenant General James Longstreets entire corps arrived by November 23 and began digging on the heights. While Longstreet established a commanding position,  Lt. General Thomas Stonewall Jacksons corps was en route from the Shenandoah Valley.   Opportunities Missed On November 25, the first pontoon bridges arrived, but Burnside refused to move, missing an opportunity to crush half of Lees army before the other half arrived. By the end of the month, when the remaining bridges arrived, Jacksons corps had reached Fredericksburg and assumed a position south of Longstreet. Finally, on December 11, Union engineers began building six pontoon bridges opposite Fredericksburg. Under fire from Confederate snipers, Burnside was forced to send landing parties across the river to clear out the town. Supported by artillery on Stafford Heights, the Union troops occupied Fredericksburg and looted the town. With the bridges completed, the bulk of Union forces began crossing the river and deploying for battle on December 11 and 12. Burnsides original plan for the battle called for the main attack to be executed to the south by Major General William B. Franklins Left Grand Division (I Corps VI Corps) against Jacksons position, with a smaller, supporting action against Maryes Heights. Held in the South Beginning at 8:30 AM on December 13, the assault was led by Major General George G. Meades division, supported by those of Brigadier Generals Abner Doubleday and John Gibbon. While initially hampered by heavy fog, the Union attack gained momentum around 10:00 AM when it was able to exploit a gap in Jacksons lines. Meades attack was eventually stopped by artillery fire, and around 1:30 PM a massive Confederate counterattack forced all three Union divisions to withdraw. To the north, the first assault on Maryes Heights had commenced at 11:00 AM and was led by the division of Major General William H. French. A Bloody Failure The approach to the heights required the attacking force to cross a 400-yard open plain which was divided by a drainage ditch. To cross the ditch, Union troops were forced to file in columns over two small bridges. As in the south, the fog prevented Union artillery on Stafford Heights from providing effective fire support. Moving forward, Frenchs men were repulsed with heavy casualties. Burnside repeated the attack with the divisions of Brigadier Generals Winfield Scott Hancock and Oliver O. Howard with the same results. With the battle going poorly on Franklins front, Burnside focused his attention on Maryes Heights. Reinforced by Major General George Picketts division, Longstreets position proved impenetrable. The attack was renewed at 3:30 PM when Brigadier General Charles Griffins division was sent forward and repulsed. Half an hour later, Brigadier General Andrew Humphreys  division charged with the same result. The battle concluded when Brigadier General George W. Gettys division attempted to attack the heights from the south with no success. All told, sixteen charges were made against the stone wall atop Maryes Heights, usually in brigade strength. Witnessing the carnage Gen. Lee commented, It is well that war is so terrible, or we should grow too fond of it. Aftermath One of the most one-sided battles of the Civil War, the Battle of Fredericksburg cost the Army of the Potomac 1,284 killed, 9,600 wounded, and 1,769 captured/missing. For the Confederates, casualties were 608 killed, 4,116 wounded, and 653 captured/missing. Of these only around 200 were suffered at Maryes Heights. As the battle ended, many Union troops, living and wounded, were forced to spend the freezing night of December 13/14 on the plain before the heights, pinned down by the Confederates. On the afternoon of the 14th, Burnside asked Lee for a truce to tend to his wounded which was granted. Having removed his men from the field, Burnside withdrew the army back across the river to Stafford Heights. The following month, Burnside strove to save his reputation by attempting to move north around Lees left flank. This plan bogged down when January rains reduced the roads to mud pits which prevented the army from moving. Dubbed the Mud March, the movement was cancelled. Burnside was replaced by Hooker on January 26, 1863.

Books significantly impact and shape our lives as it can provide a vast and constant amount of knowledge that we can use in a variety of ways. They are also essential tools in education as they serve as permanent references for individuals who constantly need to educate or update themselves with information. In addition, certain books can also serve as a form of relief from the stresses of daily life by bringing us to different worlds and places that exists only in the imagination. One of the most important uses of a book is that it provides information. Whether it’s simply a basic chemical formula or equation, an economic principle, or a history of a certain country, a book can provide them all. A book on English, for example, can teach us the proper norms of grammar, pronunciation, and also widen our vocabulary, which can all be useful as we grow up and become professionals in our respective fields. Furthermore, in the field of medicine, books serve as important references for doctors and other health personnel as there are constantly new diseases and cures that are being discovered. These professionals in the health field can utilize the valuable information they obtain from a book in various ways such as diagnosing a patient’s disease or looking up a possible treatment for a certain illness or ailment. In other words, the next scientific or medical breakthrough can be found in a book. Books can also enrich our knowledge of our own culture and background. Through a good history book, we can trace how our founding fathers established our country or how the Bill of Rights was created. In short, books that provide facts and detailed information can greatly improve our intellectual capacity as well as our ability reasoning and analytical skills which we often use in our daily lives. Another way that a book can change our lives is that it inspires and feeds our imagination. This kind of book is usually in the form of fictional novels, plays, and rich literature that can take us to places we never thought we could go to. Whether it’s marveling at the works of Shakespeare, unraveling spooky mysteries with Stephen King’s novels or simply taking a stroll with the pilgrims in Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, books that are rich in literature and creativity can inspire us to create a world similar to those that we have read about. Moreover, these kinds of books provide deeper meaning in life by showing various sides of art and various interpretations of human life. These books can also give us different perspectives in life and can even motivate us to use and express our creative skills by writing books of our own. However, the most significant way that a book can change our lives is that the information that it provides can be shared to other people. This information can enlighten those who are confused and enhance the knowledge of those who are already well-informed. Sharing the information found in books, especially to the uneducated, can inspire them to work hard and eventually provide a better life for themselves. For example, it is possible that a relatively poor man who constantly reads good books can eventually obtain a college degree simply because he used all the information he acquired from the books he has read. It can then be said that reading books and sharing the information obtained from them can immortalize us in a way as the knowledge we posses is passed down to younger and future generations. In conclusion, books can change our lives by simply providing us with in-depth information, sources of inspiration, and valuable knowledge that we can use to continuously hone our skills and talents and eventually become better people. Books can make us the next Nobel Prize Awardee, the next CEO of a major corporation, or the next award-winning writer in the future depending on how we use the information we acquire from them. Leaf Scorch Tree Disease - Prevention and Control Leaf scorch is a noninfectious condition caused by an unfavorable environment - there is no virus, no fungus, no bacterium to blame. It can not be helped by chemical control so you will have to discover the underlying causal factor which can be drying winds, drought, root damage and other environmental problems. Still, infectious diseases can attack the tree and make the condition even worse. Major target trees are Japanese maple (plus several other maple species), dogwood, beech, horse chestnut, ash, oak and linden. Symptoms Early leaf scorch symptoms commonly appear as yellowing between veins or along leaf margins. The problem is not often recognized during this early stage and can be confused with anthracnose. The yellowing becomes increasingly severe and tissue dies at leaf margins and between veins. This is the stage at which injury becomes easily noticeable. Dead tissue can often appear without any previous yellowing and restricted entirely to marginal areas and tips. Cause Scorch usually is a warning that some condition has occurred or is occurring that is adversely influencing the tree. It could be that the tree is not adapting to the local climate or has been given unsuitable exposure. Many of the conditions are the result of water not making it into the leaves. These conditions could be hot, drying winds, temperatures above 90 degrees, windy and hot weather following a long wet and cloudy period, drought conditions, low humidity or drying winter winds when soil water is frozen. Control When leaf scorch is noticed, leaf tissue has usually dried past the point of recovery and the leaf will drop. This will not kill the tree. Several steps can be taken to prevent more severe damage. Deep watering will help with moisture uptake. You need to make sure lack of water is the problem as too much water can also become a problem. Spring application of a complete fertilizer may help but do not fertilize after June. If the root system of a tree has been injured, prune the top to balance the reduced root system. Conserve soil moisture by mulching trees and shrubs with rotted leaves, bark, or other material.

5 Building Blocks of Your Characters Personality 5 Building Blocks of Your Character’s Personality 5 Building Blocks of Your Character’s Personality By Mark Nichol Now that you’ve decided what your character’s motivation is, it’s time to actually construct the vessel in which this purpose will reside. Just how do you build a person? By creating a life where none existed. Start at the base, and work your way up: 1. Childhood How was the character’s early life? What was the person’s family like? It doesn’t take much effort to stray too far into pop psychology, but household composition and environment have a significant bearing on personality. So does one’s experiences in school and in social settings as a child and an adolescent. Is domestic trauma in the character’s past? Social stigma at school? An unusual amount of teenage angst? Were they abused, neglected, spoiled, enriched? Were they denied a childhood, or unable to outgrow it? You don’t need to write your character’s biography, but you should know the outline. 2. Relationships Is the character a loner, or a social butterfly? What type of family and friends does the character have? How do they interact with acquaintances and strangers? Do they have a romantic relationship or casual sexual partners? If they’re gay, are they out, or closeted? Are they extremely close to a few friends, or do they have a wide but shallow social circle? 3. Livelihood What does the character do for a living? That may be integral to the story, or it may be incidental. Readers deserve to know, though. But don’t lock in a stereotype. It’s easy to associate personality traits with certain professions or pastimes. What’s not so easy but is oh, so satisfying is to cast against type: How about a happy-go-lucky private eye? A softhearted crook? A wizard who can’t spell straight? Do they like their job? Are they fulfilled, or frustrated? Good at what they do, or inept? How do they relate to those above and below them in the workplace hierarchy? Do they lie, cheat, or steal, or are they a paragon of productivity? Either way, are they rewarded, or punished, or ignored? 4. Pastimes What does your character do after work, on weekends? Where do they vacation? What are their hobbies, interests, passions? Do they have an eccentric or unexpected avocation? Do they have a remarkable skill or talent no one knows about? Are they philanthropic or charitable, or is all their spare time given to family and friends, or are they devoted only to themselves? 5. Outlook Is the sun always shining, or does a perpetual rain cloud perch just over the character’s shoulder? Are they blithe, cheerful, confident? Suspicious, resentful, fearful? Whether your character’s glass is half full or half empty will determine the story’s tone, so check the person’s beverage before you put fingers to keyboard or pen to paper. What are your character’s political views and social opinions? Are they religious? Skeptical? Atheistic? Scientifically minded, or superstitious? Are they charismatic, or a wallflower? So many questions! But so many answers must be provided and many more must be discovered on the journey that is the act of writing. (And some answers may change.) This character design is essential to your success not just for your main character but also, to varying degrees, for major and minor supporting players and for walk-ons. Whether you’re aiming for high literature or genre fiction, the extent to which you care about your characters and their personalities will in large part determine how readers respond to them. The program runs through various communities and targets specific people who engage in drugs and substance abuse for various reasons. Consequently, Lome targets drug dealers who sell the drugs to young people in middle and higher learning institutions (Hanson, Venturelli & Fleckenstein, 2011). The program first identifies groups of people and institutions who are at risk of using drugs such as alcohol, cocaine, marijuana among other drugs. Afterwards, the program rolls out plan of reaching them through the organization of workshops, sports, seminars and training program. During the meeting session, the program coordinators engage with drugs and substance users by discussing various negative impacts of drugs on the users and seeking their views. Thereafter, the coordinators of the program advise the youths on various ways of stopping using drugs. The program also incorporates involvement of the youths are the most affected in activities that make them exploit their talents and engage in constructive activities. For instance, the organization arranges sporting activities amongst schools, various estate teams, debates, seminars and various forms of competitions within the society, thus minimizing time available for the youths to engage in drug use (National Youth Network, 2011). The group takes various drug addicts to the several centers it has opened thus ensuring the youths are looked after during the recovery period. Martin Luther And His 95 Theses Nailed to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg on October 31, 1517 on the eve of All Saints Day (according to Philip Melanchton, Luthers colleague in Wittenberg University), Martin Luthers 95 theses paved the way for the birth of a great spiritual movement called the Protestant Reformation. The Reformation ultimately signaled the end of the Medieval Age and the inauguration of modern times. What Luther intended to be a set of propositional statements to be debated upon over the abuses associated with the sale of the indulgences very soon became the key that unlocked the door towards the long-awaited reformation of the church of the late Medieval Christendom. The Sale of the Indulgences The doctrine of indulgences is peculiar to the Roman Catholic Church, unknown to the church fathers, and most importantly, to the apostles of Christ. It is basically defined as a certificate of forgiveness granted by a bishop or an archbishop within his diocese for the remission of the temporal punishment of sin both on earth and in purgatory, the alleged source of which was the surplus of merit and grace accumulated through the lives of Christ, the Virgin Mary and the saints of the Church. What most particularly attracted Luthers attention in this regard was the extravagant preaching associated with the sale of the indulgences in Germany by a Dominican friar Johann Tetzel. Tetzel was commissioned by Albrecht, Archbishop of Mainz and Magdeburg, to raise funds for the rebuilding of Saint Peters Basilica in Rome. As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, Tetzel proclaimed, the soul from purgatory springs. Luthers long quest for truth that resulted in his discovery of the biblical doctrine of justification by faith alone must have been the reason why he indignantly reacted to such a deceptive message that offered false hopes to those who bought the indulgences for themselves and their departed loved ones on account of their ignorance of the true gospel of Christ. The 97 Theses Before the 95 Theses Convinced that he must challenge the traditional views purported by the Roman Catholic Church for centuries, he published a set of 97 theses to be debated in an academic setting among his colleagues at Wittenberg University. The theses attacked many of the major tenets of the Church with a clear message in mind: that the gospel was entirely different from what had been commonly held. Luther expected the theses to cause a stir among the participants which in turn would allow him to divulge his great discovery. To his disappointment, they only mustered little interest. Martin Luther and His 95 Theses Despite such a cold response to his 97 theses, Luther composed another set of theses which he called The Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of the Indulgences, now popularly known as the 95 theses. Like the 97 theses, this new set of theses was also meant to provoke academic discussion among his colleagues in the university. They may have been an afterthought to a letter he sent to Albrecht through which he aired his disagreement on the sale of the indulgences. However, scholars are divided whether the Luther of the 95 theses was still a Roman Catholic clergyman at this time or already a Protestant Reformer. On the one hand, Luther appeared to have thought Pope Leo X was on his side in this matter. Some scholars even suggest (probably following the church historian Philip Schaff) that he was not protesting against the indulgences, but only against its abuse. On the other hand, a closer look at the document would reveal one thing for sure: what Luther was up against was not simply the sale of the indulgences but its theological underpinnings. As Princeton theologian Benjamin Warfield puts it, They constitute, in point of fact, a theological document of the first importance, working out a complete and closely knit argument against, not the abuses of the indulgence traffic, and not even the theory of indulgences, merely, but the whole sacerdotal conception of the saving process an outgrowth and embodiment of which indulgences were. While there may be apparent remainders of Roman Catholicism in the theses, they nonetheless assert the evangelical Protestant doctrine of salvation that refuted the sacerdotal system that was largely built on tradition instead of the Bible. In summary, the 95 theses proclaimed that indulgences cannot remit guilt as such a work belongs to God alone, that they are unable to make souls spring from the Purgatory, and that the truly repentant sinner has already received the forgiveness of God and is justified by faith alone. Singing in the Rain Essay -- essays research papers

The hit musical "Singin' in the Rain" may possibly be one of if not the greatest musicals of all time. With it's tale of the film world of the mid 1920's and its creative underlining love story between Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds), it provokes the interest of someone who would not generally be attracted to a musical. It is a classic masterpiece that set the standards that musical films of today will be judged by. It is a classic performance by the great Gene Kelly and displays outstanding performances by Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor. As well as starring in this brilliant movie, Gene Kelly teams up with Stanley Donen to make their mark in film history. In my opinion, what set the stage for the level of entertainment that this movie contains is the opening scene. The opening scene set the role of sarcasm in the movie and gave the movie an immediate sense of humor. Four individual parts of movie making come together in this film to create a dynamic opening sequence. The basic principles of sound, editing, mise en scene, and cinematography collectively give this opening sequence a memorable quality that is without match. The opening of Singin' in the Rain takes place at the opening of the new movie "The Royal Rascal" starring Don Lockwood and Lena Lamont. There are famous people all around and their fans are loving every second of it. The fans' faces are full of joy and awe as their favorite actors and actresses enter the large building that will soon be showing the new movie. Soon, the two people that everyone in Hollywood is dying to see, appear in their stretched Rolls Royce and bring the crowd to its feet. As Lockwood and Lamont exit their luxurious ride they are received lovingly by everyone. They walk to the front of the building and are introduced to the crowd. Then the question is posed to Mr. Lockwood, "How did it all begin?" The answering of this question is what my paper will explain. I will attempt to break down the opening scene and show how it all started. By using tools of film such as sound, editing, mise en scene, and cinematography, this paper will show how the scene was made as well. Mise en scene played an important role in this movie as with any other movie. The properties of mise en scene were fully effective in the beginning flashback scene. At the beginning of Don Lockw... ...nd that the superimposed duo were taken from. They proceed to dance for a couple of minutes and when they are finished there is no reaction. There is a cut and we see a point-of-view shot in terms of Don and Cosmo to see that the audience is booing. This is the last scene before they actually get to Hollywood. Singin' in the Rain is the musical that all other musicals should be judged by. It tells a story that only others had dreamed of telling. Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds and the great Gene Kelly help give one of the greatest performances of all times in a musical. With the help of superb editing, sound, mise en scene, and cinematography, this film cannot be topped. The fist scene of the movie creates an atmosphere that helps the viewer know that he/she will enjoy this wonderful classic. Throughout the movie there are surprises and fun that makes this a movie that people will want to watch again and again. Gene Kelly said it best when he said, "Dignity, always dignity." Since the frequency distribution can visually be seen in the graph, it is easier to explain the results. The trend represents certain patterns that match with the frequency distribution. The Likert scale is a unidimensional scaling method. Unidimensional concepts are generally easier to understand. According to Coffey and Atkinson (1996), coding is the process of condensing the bulk of data sets into analyzable units. Coding and analyzing data based theoretical concepts has the important role of enabling rigours review on our data. Therefore, the collected data will be coded and analysed under the theoretical framework and prior reviewed literature. 5 Discussion 5. 1 Research expectation and risk The author will discuss the outputs from the case study, interviews and questionnaires. Each case study will be discussed here in full detail. Blog contents from the corporate blogs of each company will be evaluated and discussed. The research study is able to seek: why did the company considered blogging? What are the advantages and disadvantages from setting up a corporate blog? The expectation data obtained from the questionnaires will also be presented and discussed. Results obtained through the Likert scale will be interpreted. Results are also related to previous researches and theoretical issues discussed in the introduction and literature review. The author will give a brief introduction to the uses of blogs, corporate blogs, its advantages and limitations, and the issues surrounding corporate blogs, which includes privacy or information leakage of the corporation because of the freedom, entailed in corporate blogging. To which we can now generate our prediction of corporate blogging with the analysis of its strategic management implementation (rules and regulations), the perception of employees and employers, and our own analysis as to how corporate blogging can elevate the communication process among a business organization. The author expects challenging the blogging system as an entity of information and as a communication medium to delimit its disadvantages and provide better means of communication for the business sector. Assuming that results are as predicted, we can now generalize the discussion. Note, however, that different companies have different cultures and strategies in corporate blogging; thus different results would be yield, and themes would have to be established in order for data to be qualitatively analyzed. Having the prediction of the future of corporate blogging may be a challenging step but I think it is feasible in this case since we can generate information regarding how the corporate blogging system can improve and be able to overcome the challenges of advanced technology. 5. 2 The limitations of the study On major limitation of the study is that only IT companies are to be considered in data gathering. It is possible that other companies may have a different culture and perception on corporate blogging. Future research may focus on determining the perceptions of companies other than IT and compare its results with the results obtained from this study. Also, the study only analyzed the perceptions of bloggers on corporate blogging. Studies on the perception of nonbloggers (or those who have blogs but do not post regularly) may be carried out to give a more generalized rate of acceptance of blogging as a new kind of innovation. There is also a restraint in Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation Theory. It may be the most widely used theory in both individual and organizational IT adoption researches but none of the five predictors (relative advantage, compatibility with existing values and practices, simplicity and ease of use, trialability and observable results) made Jeyaraj et al. ’s (2006) list of best predictors for the aggregate IT adoption construct. Another limitation of this research is that blogging can result in legal problems because of the lack of blogging management. The integrity rules for protection and management are expected to established immediately.
